Planning a trip is always a balancing act—figuring out where to splurge, where to save, and how to make every moment unforgettable. As I plan a two-week adventure to London and Paris with my mom and sister, this balance has become even more important. We want comfort without overspending, indulgence without regret, and experiences that feel special without breaking the bank. Instead of going all-in on luxury or trimming every expense, we’re making strategic choices to get the best of both worlds.
How We’re Mixing Luxury & Budget
We’re looking for ways to create a memorable trip while keeping things financially smart. Here’s how we’re doing it:
Where We Stay
We decided against flashy five-star hotels but still prioritized location and charm. In London, we’re considering boutique hotels near Covent Garden—affordable yet stylish, and within walking distance of major sights like Trafalgar Square and the West End. Meanwhile, in Paris, we’re allowing ourselves one big splurge: a hotel with that dreamy, postcard-perfect view of the Eiffel Tower.
How We Eat
One of the best ways to immerse yourself in a city is through food—and it doesn’t have to be expensive. In London, we plan to skip hotel breakfasts and head to local cafés instead. Borough Market will be a must for street food, and we’ll indulge in classic pub fare for an affordable but authentic experience. In Paris, it’s all about balance—grabbing fresh pastries from a corner bakery in the morning, enjoying simple but delicious crêpes in the afternoon, and saving our splurge for one elegant dinner at a Michelin-starred restaurant.
What We Experience
We’re focusing on experiences that make the trip truly special, whether they’re budget-friendly or worth a little extra. We’re skipping private guided tours in favor of free walking tours (London has some fantastic Jack the Ripper and Harry Potter routes), and taking advantage of museums with free-entry days, like the British Museum and Musée d’Orsay. To make transportation easier, we’ll be using a Navigo Pass in Paris and an Oyster Card in London—simple swaps that help cut costs without sacrificing convenience.

Small Upgrades That Make a Big Difference
Sometimes, spending a little more on the right experiences can elevate the entire trip. Here are a few extras we’re considering:
Nighttime Views: A Seine river cruise in Paris to see the Eiffel Tower sparkle and a sunset ride on the London Eye—because some sights are just worth the price.
Day Trips: Exploring beyond the city for a change of scenery—maybe a trip to Bath or Stonehenge from London, or Versailles from Paris.
Staple Excursions: Skip-the-line tickets for must-see attractions like the Louvre or an evening dinner cruise on the Thames River.
The Best Travel is About Balance
At the end of the day, great travel isn’t just about how much you spend—it’s about making thoughtful choices that allow you to experience a destination in a way that’s meaningful to you. Whether that means splurging on a hotel with an incredible view or saving money by taking the Metro instead of taxis, it’s all about finding what makes a trip feel just right.
